Here is an interesting article about job-based health insurance coverage, and why our current healthcare system relies so heavily on it.
It all started back in the 40's, when the feds instituted wage and price controls to limit inflation during a time when a large amount of the workforce was off fighting WWII. Companies were suddenly unable to offer higher wages to attract employees - but they were allowed to offer other types of employee benefits, including health insurance.
