Canadian Pharmacies Struggling to Adjust To U.S. Policy Changes
Tuesday April 11, 2006
Canadian pharmacies are no longer enjoying the huge boom in business they have been experiencing in recent years. Many smaller pharmacies have been forced to close due to declining sales, and others are scrambling to find ways to remain in business. This decline is largely due to the Medicare Part D prescription drug benefit in the U.S. – now that seniors have another way to obtain their medications at a lower cost, they are no longer flocking to Canadian pharmacies in droves. Sales at Canadian pharmacies have also declined because the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol has increased its efforts to prevent importation of prescription drugs from Canada by confiscating numerous shipments crossing the border.
