BCBS of North Carolina Offers Free Generics

Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina has begin placing kiosks in doctors' offices which provide free 30-day supplies of commonly prescribed generic medications to patients. According to the Raleigh News & Observer, the goal is to encourage patients to switch from brand names to generics, which are significantly less expensive for both the insurance company and the patient. However, pharmacists are concerned that these kiosks may endanger patients by taking the pharmacy out of the equation. Pharmacists can check for drug interactions and provide medication advice to patients - something the kiosks cannot do.
