Massachusetts Requires Rx Coverage For All

Wednesday March 21, 2007
The New York Times reports that the board which regulates the Massachusetts universal health coverage initiative recently set minimum standards for the level of coverage required. All Massachusetts residents must have some form of health coverage by July of this year, and will have until January 2009 to acquire insurance which includes prescription drug coverage.

Experts say that these minimum requirements are "unprecedented" - most plans to minimize the number of uninsured individuals focus on accessibility and affordability of coverage, while ignoring the adequacy. This action by the Massachusetts board sends the message that just having coverage isn't enough - the coverage must be at least minimally comprehensive.

My daughter is a type I diabetic who also had a bone tumor when she was 9. She is currently on MC+, but when she turns 19 she will no longer have coverage. I always made sure my children had coverage, but the company we had when pulled of our state the same month her bone tumor was found — she became un-insurable. Her diabetes diagnosis followed shortly there after. HIPPA is a JOKE! Her diabetes supplies run us over $700.00 per month. I wish I could talk my husband into moving BACK to the northeast where some states still make insurance compaines cover people who really, REALLY need to have insurance!
