Never Forget that Insurance Is a Business

A recent article in the Wall Street Journal serves as a reminder that health insurance is a for-profit business that exists to make money for shareholders. According to the Kaiser Daily Health Policy Report, WellPoint has been recently been struggling to balance premium increases so that they maximize profits rather than drive customers away. These struggles affect the entire industry and may create P.R. problems during an election year where health insurance is in the spotlight.

Why do insurance companies have to be FOR PROFIT…couldn’t they operate as not-for-profits. I work at at a not-for profit and make a decent salary as do the directors, vice-presidents and EVP. Let’s take “profit” out of the health care picture.
