Options for those who will not benefit from the tax deduction

The administration estimates that approximately 20% of people with job-based coverage will have higher taxes under the proposal. This is because their job-based plan costs more than the tax deduction ($15,000 for families, $7,500 for individuals). If you are in this situation, what can you do?

  • Your employer may offer a less expensive plan which you can switch to.
  • You can look into purchasing a policy on your own in the private market. But beware - do NOT cancel your job-based coverage until you are sure you can buy a policy on your own. In most states, insurers are allowed to reject you for coverage if you have a preexisting condition.
  • Your state may begin offering special programs or offer financial assistance to those who are unable to obtain health insurance at a reasonable price. This is part of the President's proposed "Affordable Choices Initiative".

So what is this "Affordable Choices Initiative" about? Read on to find out more!
