Massachusetts Amends Subsidized Insurance Program

Massachusetts has responded to overwhelming demand for Commonwealth Care, its subsidized health insurance program, by instituting some changes designed to contain costs. According to the Boston Globe, the Board overseeing the program voted to reduce payments to physicians and limit patient choice in plan design in an effort to close a $147 million budget gap. Proposals to increase patient financial responsibility are more controversial and will be considered in more detail in February.
